Summer, vacation and resort

Summer is when men get dressing wrong in both directions: too heavy, or too casual. The answer is the same suit and jacket ideas, in lighter cloth and lighter colours.

The summer suit

• Colours: tan, stone, cream, light grey, sage. Navy still works, in a lighter cloth.
• Cloth: linen, cotton, or a wool-linen blend. Pure linen breathes best and creases most. A blend keeps its shape through a long day.
• Cut: a softer jacket with less padding, and trousers with a little room. This year's summer suits are relaxed, never sloppy.
• Double-breasted linen is a strong look for 2026: soft shoulders, wider lapels.

The sport coat

The most useful summer piece. A linen or cotton jacket over trousers in a different colour goes to dinner, a party or a nice restaurant on vacation. Beige over navy trousers, or navy over light grey.

Shirts, ties and shoes

• White or pale blue, open at the collar for the day.
• For an evening event, add a light tie in linen or silk.
• Suede loafers are the summer shoe. No socks showing, or very thin ones.

Summer wedding as a guest

• Daytime and outdoors: a light suit, white shirt, open collar or a light tie.
• Evening: a darker suit in a lighter cloth, with a tie.
• Black tie in summer: an ivory dinner jacket with black trousers and a black bow tie.
• Leave white to the bride: pick tan, grey or blue for the suit.

On vacation

Pack one light suit and one sport coat. Wear the suit together for a wedding or a dinner, and the jacket and trousers apart on other days. That's three or four looks from two pieces.
