Business and professional
The suits, shirts and ties that work all week, and how to wear them in 2026.
A good work wardrobe is a short list. Get the few pieces right, and you can get dressed in the dark all week.
Start with two suits
- Navy goes everywhere: the office, an interview, a wedding, a dinner.
- Charcoal is a touch more serious, for the big meeting and the evening.
- Two suits in rotation rest between wears and last twice as long.
Then the third suit
- Mid grey for a lighter, modern office.
- Brown is the colour of 2026 tailoring. It's challenging navy as the new default for men who already own the basics.
- Double-breasted is back, with a trim waist and peak lapels, for the man who wants to stand out a little.
What's changed in 2026
- A little more room. The skinny suit is out. Jackets have ease in the chest, trousers are fuller through the leg, often with a pleat. Still tailored, not baggy.
- Softer rules. Many offices skip the tie. A suit with an open collar, or a fine knit under the jacket, is right for most days.
- Loafers have taken over from lace-ups for everyday suiting.
Shirts and ties
- White and light blue cover almost everything. Add a fine stripe or a check later.
- Ties in navy, burgundy, green or grey, plain or with a small pattern.
- One pattern at a time: a striped tie on a plain shirt, or a plain tie on a checked shirt.
Fridays and casual days
A sport coat with trousers in a different colour, a shirt, no tie. Navy jacket with grey trousers is the classic. Beige or a soft texture for something warmer.
How it should fit

- The shoulder ends where your shoulder ends. Check it first: it's the hardest thing to alter.
- The jacket closes without pulling at the button.
- A little shirt cuff shows below the sleeve.
- The trousers sit at your waist and just touch the shoe.

- Are double-breasted suits in style in 2026?
- Yes. Double-breasted is back, with a trim waist and peak lapels.
- Do I need to wear a tie at work?
- Many offices skip it now. A suit with an open collar or a fine knit is right for most days; keep a tie for clients and big meetings.
- How should a suit fit?
- The shoulder ends where yours ends, the jacket closes without pulling, a little shirt cuff shows, and the trousers just touch the shoe.
